My Minimalist Wardrobe Journey
A few years ago I made the decision to downsize to a minimalist wardrobe. I’m still in the process of learning to live with fewer clothes and accessories, but my closet has been cut into at least 1/4 of what it used to be. I cut out all of the clothes that didn’t fit or I didn’t like first. From there I slowly started to cut out clothes I just didn’t wear as much or didn’t match anything else I owned. I slowly downsized my way to a closet full of clothes I like.
Now how is a minimalist wardrobe stylish?
There are so many fashionistas out there with massive walk-in closets that buy every beautiful thing they see. They can be stylish too! What I want to talk about is how the minimalists can also be stylish:
- Minimalists can wear a lot of black. Black is such a simple yet clean color that in today’s society looks very expensive and chic if done right.
- You don’t have to own many different beautiful things. I’d describe my sense of style as classical minimalist. I tend to wear a lot of black and white and dress business casual most days to class. I own 3 button up shirts: black, white, and a black & white. I can pair any of these with nice jeans, black pants, or a black skirt. Right there with those 6 pieces are several different outfit choices that give off a stylish vibe.
- When you own less, you worry less about picking out an outfit. I’ll admit it. I wear some of the same outfits sometimes. But do you know what? I still get compliments on my style even if I repeat what I wear. My closet has many different neutral colored clothes that almost all go together. I don’t have to worry about whether my outfit that day is going to be stylish or not because I already know all of the different components of my wardrobe.
What even is style?
There are so many different types of stylish people in the world. Even in the minimalist community, I know people that wear all black and white, people who own small closets of colorful pieces, and people how travel the world with 2 shirts and a pair of pants. Each person has to develop their own sense of style. I suggest basing your style of things you like to wear and items that make you feel good. From their, plan your wardrobe around those pieces. Everyone has their own sense of style. I find black, white, and neutral clothes most comforting and fashionable in my eyes. There are some people out their like the famous Iris Apfel who owns countless colorful clothes and accessories.
